Burney has turned the boring green power box into the talking point of Staines St. Mrs Burney came up with the idea after the box, outside her neighbour’s house, was tagged and the graffiti wasn’t removed.
“I asked Chorus for approval to paint the box and sent them a plan, it took a couple of months but they finally agreed,” she said. Although since she was formally commissioned by the power company, Burney said

By Julia Evans BUSINESSES ON Cranford St are pleading with the city council to change the Northern Arterial designs or they will have to shut up shop. “I’ve told them they’ll have to buy our business . . . we’ll have to shut our doors, that’s where it’s heading,” said Keith Wayman, who owns Small World Preschool and Nursery with his wife Sue. The upgrade will see Cranford St widened to four lanes. Mr Wayman says businesses on the street will struggle if the city council removes car parking and does not include U-turning bays. Mr Wayman has worked with the city council to include Uturning bays to maintain access to businesses along the stretch between McFaddens Rd and the rural zone. “We just wanted turning bays down the end,” he said. City council manager planning and delivery transport Lynette Ellis said the city council is still working on the final design. “The design team is currently engaging with affected stakeholders and the final design is yet to be confirmed,” she said. •Turn to page 5

Bid to fix Mairehau’s crash corner Residents fear next smash will be fatal By Andrew King RESIDENTS ON a Mairehau street believe it’s only a matter of time before a child is seriously hurt following a number of crashes at one of its corners. Residents between 59 and 65 Glenfield Cres have seen plenty of people misjudge the corner outside their homes. The latest incident put a man in hospital with serious injuries after he hit a parked vehicle in a driveway on September 13. He had to be cut from the vehicle by firefighters and resident Dave Parson’s work vehicle was badly damaged. Bob Autridge, who has lived on the street for the past 16 years, said something needs to be done. “We need a bloody great big sign and some speed bumps put in,” he said. “It is only a matter of time before some kid on the footpath gets it.” City council transport operations manager Aaron Haymes said a report on the

Installing two speed bumps would cost about $50,000 but Mr Haymes said, at the present time, traffic calming initiatives were not a high-priority and funding was not available for these types of schemes.
Mr Autridge asked the Papanui-Innes Community Board last year to paint yellow lines around the corner to improve visibility, which they did in January. Residents say the lines were a good start, but more needs to be done. In June, a woman failed to take the corner and ended up on the front lawn of the property next

Traffic danger for children St Albans resident and mother Rachel Donaldson writes about the danger traffic in the suburb is putting children in FOR THE last five years I have walked my children to and from school but I never meant to continue escorting them. After a certain age, once they were clear on stopping, looking and listening, I felt confident that like my own childhood, I would just say goodbye to them at the door and they would go without me. The busiest road that they have to cross is considered the “gold standard” of intersections. It is a signal operated intersection at the junction of Cranford and Berwick Sts in St Albans. The green man tells you when to cross accompanied by a loud buzzer. We all know them. However, for the last five years I have watched cars run the red lights with a frequency that increases every week. Some days cars will drive through the red light at this intersection at every single light change. In the last six months, I have
seen a child clipped by the wing mirror of a car that crossed through the intersection while the green man was going and this was the tipping point. My road safety advice to my children has changed from “waiting for the green man” to “even when the green man flashes up and the buzzer is going, always double check that someone isn’t going to come through anyway and stand back against the fence while waiting to cross due the phenomenal speed that cars are travelling at.” I have no confidence that drivers will obey the road rules when they see schoolchildren crossing at an intersection where there is a very clear stop/go signal. Instead, I have taught my children to be the second-guessers, to be the defensive pedestrians, not to expect that an adult driving a car will have more road sense than them, a seven and a nineyear-old. This selfish driving behaviour
led to my getting signs made and put up – not only at the Cranford and Berwick Sts intersection but at the other major intersection that is used by St Albans School children, the Cranford and Westminster Sts intersection. This crossing not only meets the “gold standard” of intersections but St Albans School, for the last eight years, has paid (from their own, extremely limited education budget) a lady to monitor and guide children through the intersection due to the sheer number of red lightrunners that drive this section of road every single day. And still St Albans residents and school parents wait for the city council that moves at glacial speed to do something about the lack of signage along Cranford St to let drivers know that over 600 children go to St Albans school and use this road to get home every day. That in our suburb there are almost 1000 children on the move. As I watch the Northern Corridor inching closer and closer to completion and see the impact that increased traffic flows are going to have on pedestrians along Cranford St, I know that I will be walking my kids to school and back for the foreseeable future.

and I am sure that drivers have taken notice of them. The biggest reason these signs were put up is there is no lights or signs to indicate to drivers to slow down to 30km/h as there is a school in the area. Sure there is English Park there but a lot of schoolchildren walk through its car park to get to Cranford St and then to get home. This is something important the city council should be doing something about, therefore those signs were a great incentive. Besides Cranford St is very busy at the time when children come out of school, just like rush hour. So if you ask me, I think the city council wants the children to be killed. It seems the city council doesn’t care about life, instead it only cares about money. I say: “Let us forget money, and concentrate on saving lives.” That should be on the top of its list.

I wait daily for some evidence of a city council response. I live off Gardiners Rd between Harewood and Sawyers Arms Rds. I use the intersection daily. Until earlier this year, I commuted to Lincoln via Johns Rd. It is utter nonsense for John Stringer to opine that the well-designed new roundabout arrangement on Johns Rd is more dangerous than having to cross the four lanes on Harewood, Gardiners and Breens Rds corner with no assistance what-
soever. Frustration here causes people to take risks or have to turn left and take the nearest Uturn to get onto the other side. Mr Keown is undoubtedly representing the interests of his area. Mr Stringer is not, and should not interfere. Anything that the local media can do to hasten action on this traffic hazard would be appreciated. Graeme Wood – We live not far from the Harewood, Breens, Gardiners Rds intersection and try to avoid most turns from this dangerous intersection. I would suggest the powers to be place temporary cameras to see what happens at this site. The police would have a field day at the amount of motorists that fail to stop at the compulsory stop signs, and the drivers who play Russian roulette to get from Breens to Gardiners and vice versa (four lanes, two each way).
If the city council can put traffic lights on Sawyers Arms Rd outside Northlands Shopping Centre, then they should get their priorities right an install them at Harewood, Breens and Gardiners Rds. The Harewood/Russley roundabout flows very well and controls major traffic. Maybe Mr Stringer (above) has a night job and sleeps during the day and doesn’t see what goes on? And one day Amy Huang, a former Rangi Ruru Girls’ School student, will be on the list of alumni. The 19-year-old has flown to the United States to take up a place in the fine arts programme, based in Providence. Ms Huang will be able to cross-register her classes against the same offered at the Ivy League Brown University. And the Rhode Island school wasn’t her only option in the states. Ms Huang was also accepted into Pittsburgh’s Carnegie Mellon University, which Andy Warhol attended, and she made the waiting list for Harvard University. “The Rhode Island School of Design is well known and respected for its arts faculty, in fact it is probably the most prestig-

An artist by trade, Mrs Burney has been working from her Bishopdale home since the February 22, 2011, earthquake forced her out of her last place of work – the Christchurch Arts Centre. “I’ve done a few portraits from my place but nothing like this box,” she said. But Mrs Burney said it’s been a “very liberating” process. “Usually I paint quite small and detailed. This is detailed but it’s got me painting big,” she said. Mrs Burney has never had such a social job as she said art is often quite isolating. People in the neighbourhood have been stopping to chat, tooting their horns as they drive by and even inviting her in for cups of tea. “I’d love to do more, it’s been really cool, really fun,” Mrs Burney said.

$900k revamp set to start in November By Julia Evans ST ALBANS residents who have been unable to use their neighbourhood park for almost seven years have received an apology. The Papanui-Innes Community Board has said sorry for the significant delays to the turf renewal and pavilion rebuild, which has seen the condition of St Albans Park deteriorate since the February 22, 2011, earthquake. Although the park’s $900,000 revamp is set to start in November, board chairwoman Ali Jones said the delay has been far too long and the community deserved an apology. Nearby residents said the renewal couldn’t come soon enough. Information about the work schedule and an apology has been sent to the St Albans Residents’ Association for the entire community. Association co-chairwoman Emma Twaddell said it will be

Student’s poem marks women’s right to vote By Julia Evans

KATE ELLIS’ poem is about empowering women. It was particularly significant then that the Papanui resident and year 12 St Margaret’s College student took out the Lois Middlemiss Secondary
School Poetry Award on the 124th anniversary of women receiving the right to vote. Kate recited her poem in front of the National Council of Women at the Kate Sheppard Memorial in the central city to mark the anniversary.

Cobham’s Disney show Robots tell shark attack story By Emily O’Connell COBHAM Intermediate is currently putting on its production of Disney’s The Lion King Junior. The show, which has a cast of 80 students, is directed by Impact Dance and Stage School tutor Mandy Roberts. Year 8 pupils Maggie Harris and Lily Barrowcliffe both act in the production and describe it as a “heart-warming, entertaining family show which will blow you away and take you on a journey through the circle of life.” The pupils take part in all aspects of the show – from performing on stage to working in teams on make-up, set painting, sound, lighting and front-ofhouse.

Students hit notes in choir THE CITY’S most vibrant public art season is fast approaching. And to mark the beginning of the SCAPE Public Art season next month, four north-west students will sing as part of the New Zealand Secondary Students’ Choir. Alex Meekings, of Burnside High, Holly Evans, of Rangi Ruru Girls’ School, Samantha Hickford, of Christchurch Girls’ High, and Billie MacGibbon, of St Margaret’s College, will perform with the choir in three special concerts from
October 7-8. The first will be at the Margaret Mahy Family Playground, then St Mary’s Pro-Cathedral and finally at the Transitional Cathedral’s morning service. The choir rehearses under the direction of Andrew Withington and is conducted by Matthew Everingham. Mr Withington recently completed his PhD in choral pedagogy at Canterbury University while Mr Everingham runs the choral programme at St Andrew’s College.
By Julia Evans A TEAM of Selwyn House pupils is paving the way to a robotic future. The school’s year 6 robotics team of Evelyn King, Sonya LiMcHenry, Sophie Schneideman and Aria Wakelin took out top spot in the junior theatre division of the Robocup nationals in Dunedin. The pupils had to make and design robots, which would then be programmed to perform a piece of theatre. Their robots combined to tell the story of a woman they admire – Bethany Hamilton, a professional surfer who survived a shark attack but lost her arm in the process. The story depicted the shark attack but went on to celebrate her resilience and return to surfing. Teachers Liz Fairhall and Simon Christie helped the pupils with their robotics during a class unit of inquiry. The pupils used Lego EV3 kits and Arduino microprocessors to create their robots. If they found the Lego kits did not have a piece they were looking for, they designed and

Message from the Catholic Diocese of Christchurch Our Diocese is proud of Marian College. The school is thriving at its inner-city campus location alongside the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament on Barbadoes Street. Marian College shows us clearly that the heart of a Catholic school lies not in its buildings, but in a strong, supportive community built around faith. Marian College belongs to the Catholic Kāhui Ako Community of Learning, one of our 13 schools in Christchurch. Each school has an affiliated parish and networks contributing to the Diocese. Alongside our Diocese earthquake rebuild and repair programme, our parishes have been offered the chance to focus on spiritual renewal as we wait for a new Bishop to be appointed. The process for the rebuild of Marian College’s campus will be a priority for our new Bishop, who will ultimately make the decision on Marian College’s permanent site. This decision will not be made in isolation however, there are many factors to consider and groups to consult with, given the changes in our communities since the earthquakes. The Diocese looks forward to keeping the community updated on progress. In the meantime, Marian College continues to achieve excellent results and to thrive. Feast Day Festivities One of the most anticipated events on the Marian College calendar is Feast Day – recognised every year to celebrate the Assumption of Mary. This year, Feast Day began with a whole school Mass, which included the blessing of the new music department, featuring practice spaces and a multipurpose room. Traditional Feast Day activities involve Marian College’s house groups coming together in Xavier Hall to compete in a talent quest and house group chant competition. Rivalry between the four Marian College houses – Brodie, Deans, Seymour and Takahe – is strong and overwhelmingly positive. Students have been known to rehearse their chants and performances for up to six weeks in advance, polishing their acts ready for competition. Each performance is judged and awarded house points which are tallied throughout the year. The house with the most points earned – for academic, sporting, cultural, service and cultural achievements – is awarded the annual Inter-House Shield at the end of year school prize giving.
Aiming for France
Football talent Rebecca Lake (Ngāi Tahu, Ngāti Irakehu) could be heading to France next year to represent New Zealand and play in the 2018 U20 Women’s World Cup. The Year 13 Marian college student helped captain the New Zealand U19 Football team to victory in the Oceania Football Confederation championships in Auckland recently, securing the team’s spot in France, 2018. Rebecca captained the team twice over the five game campaign which saw the team win all their games convincingly. Rebecca is a member of the Football Ferns development squad and has played with Mainland Pride (the National Women’s regional team) for three years.
Judo medallist Congratulations to Ria Kney (Ngāti Kahungunu) who won a gold medal in the U52kg girls category at the New Zealand Secondary Schools Judo Tournament last term. She won all five of her fights in the one day tournament held at Lincoln High School. Ria also won gold in two categories at the Auckland International Judo Open tournament held three weeks later at ASB Stadium in Auckland. One of her fights lasted just ten seconds!
Wellbeing and service A priority for Marian College this year has been student and staff wellbeing. This year, Marian has introduced two new courses: Kia Maia and Mana Wahine. Kia Maia is a course for Year 9 students which focuses on wellbeing, character strengths, use of money, cyber safety and developing study and life skills. The Mana Wahine course aims to promote strong Marian women. Especially for year 12 students, the course teaches wellbeing, study techniques, life skills, careers, financial literacy and service. Marian College has a strong commitment to providing service to the community. Not only students, but staff members are also actively involved. Marian College staff members rolled up their sleeves recently, to spend an afternoon participating in a range of service activities including assisting at Christchurch City Mission and St Vincent de Paul, cleaning up a beach, gardening for the Beatitude sisters, making goods for Christchurch Hospital’s neo-natal unit and other children in need.
Southern Jam Marian College’s Jazz Band travelled to the Southern Jam Jazz Festival in Blenheim recently – taking part in the showcase and celebration of the South Island’s secondary school jazz bands. Marian College’s Jazz Band performed at eight public venues and took home a bronze award. Band director Frances Daly is a Marian old girl currently studying at Ara Jazz School. Frances inspired the Jazz Band to compose an original song ‘Dirty Window’, which won Best Original Song at this year’s Christchurch Jazz Festival.

Pool full of medals for St Andrew’s SPORTS By Andrew King ST ANDREW’S College made a huge splash at the New Zealand secondary school swimming championships. The college crowned best co-ed school and the boys’ team came second. The 16-strong team won a total of 31 medals – 12 gold, 13 silver and six bronze – at the event in Hamilton from September 15-17. Each podium finish gave the school points, which were
added up to give them their final position at the end of the competition. School spokeswoman Anj Hawkins said there were personal bests and medals at the meet, an achievement the school is proud of. “These results are promising. It’s very pleasing to see a lot of young talent coming through the year groups. This no doubt makes for some exciting years to come for the St Andrew’s College swim team,” she said.

Congratulations to all those who participated in Burnside High School’s 2017 ‘Shave For a Cure’. On Friday the 25th of August, a brave group of 20 students shaved their hair to raise funds as well as awareness for Leukaemia & Blood Cancer New Zealand. This organisation ensures all individuals and families who are sadly faced with Leukaemia & Blood Cancer are well supported. The
shave took place at lunchtime creating a supportive atmosphere with many students helping out. Large support from Burnside High School’s community saw the team raise over $5,900! Table Tennis Both our Boys and Girls Table Tennis teams competed this year in the NZ Secondary Schools Championships held in Palmerston North. The Boys won the Open A grade, beating Auckland Grammar in the final. The Girls won the Girls grade, beating Macleans
College in the final. This is the first time our Table Tennis teams have attended the National tournament, and possibly the first time in the history of this tournament that one school has taken out both titles.

NZ call-up for college captains By Andrew King ST ANDREW’S hooker Shilo Klein and Christ’s College centre Isaiah Punivai have been named in the New Zealand Schools team. Klein and Punivai both captained their sides in the UC Championship campaign and caught the eye of national selectors. Only five South Islanders have been included in the New Zealand Schools side set to play three matches next month. St Andrew’s sports co-ordinator Rod McIntosh said it was a well-deserved call up. “He is a pretty special kid who set goals at the start of the year and has achieved them,” he said. The New Zealand Schools Barbarian side has also been named
and included Christchurch Boys’ High halfback Louie Chapman and fullback/first-five Rico Syme, as well as Christ’s College prop Patrick Thacker. Thacker, Punivai and Chapman all have one more year of secondary school to go, giving them a rare opportunity to be selected in either team again next year. New Zealand Schools takes on Fiji Schools on Thursday, the Australian Schools Barbarians on Monday and the Australian Schools on October 7. All games will be played in Sydney. The New Zealand Barbarians Schools will meet Tonga Schools on Monday and the New Zealand Maori under-18s on October 7 in Palmerston North.
Jones in camp for NZ’s age group World Cup challenge St Andrew’s College student Matt Jones has been selected in the New Zealand team to compete at the under-17 World Cup in India next month. Jones was in the under-17 team which competed at the Oceanic Football Confederation championship where they won the title and qualified for the World Cup. The team left for India on Friday.

SPRING ONION PANCAKES Ingredients 250g Plain flour, plus extra for dusting 80 ml Boiling water 70 ml Cold water 2 Tbsp Vegetable oil 1 bunch Spring onion, finely chopped 1 tsp Sesame seeds Directions Put the flour in a bowl and add the boiling water, stirring with chopsticks. This is called ‘burning’ the flour. Give it a mix
and once it has cooled enough, continue mixing with your hands. Add the cold water, a quarter at a time, and continue mixing. When mixed thoroughly, take the dough out of the bowl and knead on a flour-covered bench. You may need to add more flour as you knead. Continue kneading until the dough is shiny and your hands and the bench are clear of dough. Roll the dough into a ball and place in a bowl covered with cling film. Seat aside for about half an hour. Take a piece of dough about the size of your fist and roll it out on the bench into a circle about 15cm in diameter. Spread some
vegetable oil over the dough, then sprinkle over the chopped spring onion. Sprinkle over the sesame seeds. Roll the pancake into a tight cylinder, then coil it around into a circle (like a caterpillar rolling itself into a circle). With a rolling pin, flatten this circle into a pancake again. Add oil to your frying pan and heat to a medium-high heat. Add the pancake to the frying pan and fry until golden, then flip and cook the other side until golden and crisp. Serve as a side dish with chilli oil or chilli sauce or your favourite Asian-inspired dip. Also great at breakfast time.

Preheat the oven to 180 deg C fan bake. Combine the first 10 ingredients in a bowl. Mix in one egg. Divide mixture evenly onto four sheets of pastry, taking care to ensure you leave some space on each edge (about 2.5cm) for easy rolling. Lightly beat remaining egg for egg wash and brush the edges to help seal the pinwheel. Roll each sheet from the long end and cut each into four pinwheels with a sharp knife. Melanoma Deadlier Than Road Fatalities Summer is around the corner, and it brings with it the temptation for some to “pre-tan” using artificial UV tanning equipment; but is it really worth the risk?
M
ore people die from melanoma each year than are killed annually in road crashes. This statistic was part of a comprehensive submission made to parliament’s Health Select Committee which is considering outlawing sunbeds for people under the age of 18 years. The submission was made by Accuro Health Insurance, established in the 1970s as a private insurer for the public health sector. Today it trades as a private health insurer with a widespread, general membership. Accuro, in supporting the submission made by the New Zealand Dermatological Society, pointed to a New Zealand Cancer Society figure of 324 deaths from melanoma in 2010. According to the NZ Road Transport Agency there were 253 road deaths for the 12 months to February 2014 and 303 for the 12 months to February 2015. In highlighting the figure, CEO Geoff Annals emphasised the serious nature of the disease and his submission drew the committee’s attention to the financial, social and personal costs of skin cancer. He quoted Cancer Society figures which report that New Zealand, along with

Australia, has amongst the highest melanoma rates in the world. In 2010 melanoma was the fourth most common cancer with 2,341 registered cases and the sixth most common cause of death from cancer. The Cancer Society further reports that skin cancer currently costs this country about $123 million annually. Geoff Annals says research by the Centre for Disease Control showed the introduction of seat belts reduced serious crash related injuries and deaths by about half and banning artificial UV tanning services is warranted on the same public health grounds as the compulsory seat belt legislation. While Accuro’s submission related to a ban for people under 18 years, it supports the introduction of a total ban on commercial artificial UV tanning. “As a health insurer grounded in the public health sector, we are strongly committed to supporting the effectiveness of publicly funded health services and better health outcomes for all New Zealanders,” Geoff Annals says. A leading New Zealand dermatologist, Dr Louise Reiche, who also made submissions to the Health Select Committee, says she’s
treating many young people, especially women in their 20s and 30s, with melanomas resulting from commercial sunbed exposure. She says clients typically lie naked on their sunbeds and expose skin to radiation emitted from UV lamps which can be up to 13 times greater than the peak summer sun. She’s now treating people with cancer of the genital skin which is more vulnerable to skin cancer development. “The medical profession is run off their feet with people presenting themselves with skin cancers causing the public health system to be overwhelmed,” Dr Reiche says. “The waiting list is three to four months for urgent cases and, during the delay, the cancers are growing. This results in poorer health outcomes and more complex and expensive procedures.”

Renee Murray from Expo Organisers, NZME Events says “We will be bringing a fabulous experience to the women of Canterbury for one weekend.
